NYSC Relocation Documentation: What to Take, Where to Go and What Happens Next

Getting your NYSC relocation approval is a big step - but it does not mean the process is completely over.

Once NYSC approves your redeployment to another state, you still need to report to the NYSC office in your new state, complete your documentation, and wait for your new PPA posting.

For many corps members, this stage can be confusing. Where exactly should you go? What documents are required? Do you need your Green Card? What happens after documentation?

This guide breaks down the NYSC relocation documentation process from start to finish, including the documents to take, what happens at the Secretariat, what to expect after documentation, and the addresses of NYSC Secretariats across Nigeria.

Important: Documentation procedures can vary slightly from one state to another. A state may change the order of processing or request an additional document, but the requirements below are the standard documents you should expect.

Where Should You Go After NYSC Relocation?

After your relocation has been approved, your next step is to report to the NYSC Secretariat in your new state of deployment.

The Secretariat is generally located in the state capital, although Lagos is an exception.

If you are unsure of the location, the NYSC Secretariat is usually a known landmark. Commercial drivers and other motorists can often direct you if you simply tell them you are going to the NYSC Secretariat.

Dress Properly Before Going

Do not treat the visit like an ordinary office appointment.

You should go in your complete NYSC uniform. Corps members who are not properly dressed may be denied access to the premises and could be required to return another day.

So, before leaving home, confirm that you have your uniform and all your documents.

NYSC Relocation Documentation Requirements

To avoid unnecessary trips, prepare your documents before visiting the Secretariat.

You should generally go with:

  • Two passport photographs

  • NYSC Green Card

  • NYSC Relocation Letter

  • Certificate or Statement of Result

  • NYSC Identity Card

  • Request Letter, if applicable

  • International Passport data page, for foreign-trained graduates

  • Current practising licence, for applicable medical and health-related graduates

  • Bank account details

Some states may request additional information, so it is advisable to have other relevant NYSC documents available if you have them.

1. Two Passport Photographs

Take two passport photographs with you.

You can use the photographs you used during orientation camp or take new ones.

There is no fixed background colour stated for the photographs. The important thing is that your face is clear and easily identifiable.

2. Your NYSC Green Card

Your NYSC Green Card contains important biodata that NYSC officials can use to verify your records.

Take a printed copy with you.

A black-and-white copy is sufficient; you do not need to print it in colour.

3. NYSC Relocation Letter

This is one of the most important documents for the process.

Your relocation letter confirms that NYSC has approved your movement from your original state of deployment to the new state.

Go with:

  • The original coloured printout of your relocation letter

  • A photocopy

The officials may request both during the documentation process.

Without proof of your approved relocation, the Secretariat may not be able to process your documentation.

4. Certificate or Statement of Result

Your academic document helps NYSC confirm your qualification and course of study. It may also be relevant when determining your eventual Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

University graduates

Take your:

  • Bachelor's degree certificate, or

  • Statement of result

Polytechnic graduates

It is advisable to take both:

  • OND certificate or statement of result

  • HND certificate or statement of result

5. NYSC Identity Card

Take the NYSC ID card issued to you in your previous state of deployment.

You will typically need a photocopy for documentation, but it is advisable to have the original with you as well in case the officials need to verify your identity.

6. Request Letter — If You Already Have a PPA in Mind

A request letter is not compulsory for everyone.

It is relevant if an organisation in your new state is willing to accept you for your service year.

For example, if you have already contacted an organisation and they have agreed to take you, the organisation may issue a request letter asking NYSC to consider posting you there.

Take the letter along when completing your relocation documentation.

However, a request letter does not guarantee that NYSC will post you to that organisation.

Also note that some states do not honour request letters. Ogun and Oyo are examples.

7. International Passport Data Page

This requirement applies to foreign-trained graduates.

If you studied outside Nigeria, take a photocopy of the data page of your international passport.

Graduates of Nigerian institutions do not need to provide this document for this purpose.

8. Practising Licence for Medical and Health-Related Graduates

If your profession requires a practising licence, make sure your current licence is available.

This applies to relevant medical and health-related professions, including:

  • Doctors

  • Dentists

  • Pharmacists

  • Nurses

  • Other applicable health professionals

NYSC uses the licence to confirm that you are properly registered and authorised to practise your profession.

This can be particularly relevant because health-related corps members may be posted to hospitals, clinics and other healthcare establishments.

9. Bank Account Details

Your NYSC allowance payments need to continue after relocation, so take the details of the bank account opened for you in your previous state of deployment.

Depending on the state, you may also be asked for other banking information, such as your BVN.

It is therefore better to have your relevant bank details readily available rather than assume you will not be asked for them.

What Happens at the NYSC Secretariat?

The exact procedure can differ from state to state, but the general process follows the same pattern.

Step 1: Report to the Secretariat

Arrive in your NYSC uniform with your required documents.

Step 2: Submit Your Documents

Officials will check your documents and verify your NYSC records.

Step 3: Open Your File

After your documents have been verified, a file will be opened for you.

The documents you submit will be arranged and filed according to the instructions given by the NYSC officials.

You do not need to worry about arranging everything perfectly beforehand.

Step 4: Complete Additional Formalities

Depending on the state, you may also be asked to fill the Book of Life.

This may be completed on the same day or you may be told when to return if it is not done immediately.

How Long Does NYSC Relocation Documentation Take?

In many cases, the documentation can be completed within the same day if your documents are complete and there is no unusual delay.

However, this is not guaranteed.

You may need to return another day if:

  • A required document is missing

  • There is a large number of corps members waiting to be attended to

  • Your state follows a different processing arrangement

The safest approach is to arrive prepared and allow enough time for the process.

What Happens After Relocation Documentation?

Completing documentation at the Secretariat is not the final step.

After your documents have been processed, keep checking your NYSC dashboard.

The first major update to look out for is a change in your state code.

Your new state code should replace the code associated with your previous state of deployment after successful processing. This usually reflects within a few days.

Once your state code changes, continue checking your dashboard for your PPA letter.

When Will Your New PPA Letter Appear?

Your PPA letter tells you the organisation where NYSC has posted you to serve in your new state.

Do not be alarmed if it does not appear immediately after your state code changes.

For some corps members, the PPA letter may appear within a few days. For others, it may take a week or even longer.

The important thing is to keep checking your dashboard until the letter becomes available.

What To Do When Your PPA Letter Is Released

Once the PPA letter appears:

  1. Print the letter.

  2. Go to the organisation stated on the letter.

  3. Report for your PPA posting.

  4. The organisation will either accept or reject your posting.

  5. Regardless of the outcome, proceed to the Local Government Inspector (LGI) office in the local government where your PPA is located.

  6. Complete the remaining NYSC documentation and required formalities.

At this point, your dealings are no longer primarily with the NYSC State Secretariat.

Final Checklist Before You Leave for Documentation

To make the process easier, go through your documents before leaving home:

  • Complete NYSC uniform

  • Two passport photographs

  • NYSC Green Card

  • Original and photocopy of relocation letter

  • Certificate or Statement of Result

  • NYSC ID card and photocopy

  • Request letter, if applicable

  • International Passport data page, if foreign-trained

  • Current practising licence, where applicable

  • Bank account details

  • BVN or other banking information, if required

Your Relocation Is Not Complete Until You Follow Through

An approved NYSC relocation is only the beginning of the process.

After approval, report to the appropriate NYSC Secretariat, complete your documentation, monitor your dashboard for the new state code, and then wait for your PPA letter.

Once your PPA letter is released, report to the organisation listed on it and proceed to the appropriate LGI office to complete the remaining formalities.

The key is simple: don't stop at the relocation approval. Complete the documentation and keep monitoring your NYSC dashboard until your new posting is fully processed.
